Dr. Ing. Gunnar Seemann

Head of Computational Modelling
  • Functional modelling of the heart including electrophysiology, propagation, tension development, deformation and electromechanical interactions from protein to ECG
  • Precise modelling of physiological function of the atria and ventricles to enable a predictive value of pathological descriptions (e.g. atrial fibrillation, ischemia, genetic defects, and drug effect)
  • Heterocellular interaction modelling (myocytes and fibroblasts)
  • Optogenetic modelling

Gunnar Seemann studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) (1994-2000). At the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) he started to work on computational modelling of the cardiac function for his diploma thesis (2000), which he continued for his PhD thesis ‘Modelling of Electrophysiology and Tension Development in the Human Heart’ (2005). Following this, he stayed as an assistant and later on as an associate professor and research group leader at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at KIT (2005-2015). Since 2016 Gunnar Seemann heads the Computational Modelling section at the IEKM in Freiburg.
