Research Group “Global Health: Cardiovascular diseases and emergency care”

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and more specifically cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major driver of morbidity and mortality – not only in high-income countries like Germany but also in low- and middle-income-countries all over the globe. Around 70% of all global deaths are due to non-communicable diseases, almost half of these deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. The number and the relative relevance of NCDs and CVDs is expected to rise over the years to come since people are getting older and older and communicable diseases will be controlled better than ever before.

Major cardiovascular risk factors like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, smoking or physical inactivity are prevalent all over the globe. Globalization, migration and the consequences of global warming and climate change make it increasingly important to focus not only on constrained clinical settings or single diseases but rather taking a global perspective considering interdependencies and mutual connections between diseases, risk factors, communities and regions.

We investigate cardiovascular diseases and acute and emergency care under various conditions and circumstances with a strong focus on global relationships and interdependencies and the specific needs and challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Our work strongly relies on an interdisciplinary approach and partnerships with related disciplines and research groups.
